Ogre, in its original iteration came out in 1977. It was small and could fit in a Ziploc bag. It packed a punch, was easy to learn, and was straight to the point fun. Fast forward to now, the 6th edition of the game, and we still have that lovable Ogre blowing things up.
In Ogre you have a large map with one side controlling infantry, the other side controlling the Ogre (a future cybernetic tank armed to the teeth with explosives and weaponry) There are varying levels of winning, but generally, the Ogre wins if it can get to the other side, destroy the command post, get back to its original side and leave the battlefield. The infantry wins if they take down the ogre either by immobilizing it or destroying it completely.
What makes Ogre so fun, is how quickly you are thrown into the action. The infantry has a lot of tanks and lil' guys running around doing their best to blow out the treads on the Ogre. They need to position properly and do as much damage as possible, while also trying not to get run over.
The Ogre has a small stat sheet showing all its weapons, and how much damage is on its treads. Depending on the size of the Ogre you choose to fight with also determines the size of the army you go against.
There's a small table you refer to when rolling the one die to attack. No massive stat graphs or anything like in most war games. There are a few terrain pieces, but other than that it's very straightforward and right to the point. Go boom.
There are expansions to make the armies crazier and bigger, a TON of different types of Ogres, and different maps to play on. I honestly can't wait to try them out. You can make this a massive war game spanning your whole table or keep it light and fun with good ol' classic Ogre. It's a fantastic entry point to this style of game and one I hope to introduce to many more people!
