Breaking new! A monster has come to destroy the island! What ever shall we do?! 👑
There are many people like me who were introduced to board gaming by few "gateway games". For me, King of Tokyo was one I didn't try for a good month or so into my gaming life. I bought it having put it off for a while back in 2015. After playing it, I was hooked. It was a hit with my family, as they love Yahtzee.
We consumed it all, power up expansion, King of New York, Halloween expansion, Dark edition, etc. We loved it. Eventually the time came where it wasn't brought to the table as much. As is life. From time to time we'd bring it out.
Then years later King of Monster Island was announced. A co-op version of King of Tokyo??? My wife and I love co-op games and this seemed fantastic. A 3d volcano? A recognizeable system with new mechanics. Working together to defeat a boss! It was like we were kids again. And honestly a wonderful way to play.
In this game you'll be working together to beat a selected boss. Dropping it's action dice in the volcano to know where it moves. You still roll like the original, but there are some new symbols that help build boats or allow you to move. You can lock dice for people to use on their turns. You can heal each other, attack the bosses and minions and power up with help from ninjas, the media, and more!
While it can be tough at times, the familiarity is comforting. You need to work together as with any good co-op. This one has a soft spot in my heart, because it reminds me of when I first began this wonderful adventure of board gaming and seeing how it has evolved. ✨
