When I was younger I absolutely did not like the taste of the classic candy known as Whoppers. Malt chocolate spheres that were crunchy, had a taste that hinted at chocolate, but was strange enough to be distinct in its own way. Then one day, for whatever reason, I decided to eat some of this off-putting candy (at least for me) and a switch flipped. I enjoyed it.
What does this have to do with Claim you may ask? Well, I had bought the small little box of Claim a long time ago. It sat on the shelf for a good few years before even thinking about it. I was in a different gaming phase. I wanted the big and grandiose. The flashy and newest things. A trick-taking game? That's old and played out right?
Fast-forward to a Wednesday evening where my wife and I decided to have a date night at a local cafe/coffee shop. We got a bottle of wine to share, a small tray of some cheese and crackers, and brought a game. Why did I choose Claim? Well, I believe it was during a time when we were getting into small card games and I could fit this into my pocket.
We read the rules and played our first game. During this game I kept either obtaining/acquiring the 0 Goblin card which there are multiple of in the deck. My look of amazement must have been quite big as, Elisabeth, bust out laughing. She continued to laugh each time a 0 Goblin hit the table. This made me laugh in response at the ridiculousness of it all. We couldn't stop.
Trick-taking did not click with me until this moment. We played for a good 2 hours after this. The light bulb in my head finally turned on and the whole rest of that month we played any trick-taking game we could get our hands on! The hidden depth and curiosity of a game like this is so wonderful in so small a package.
Don't like trick-taking games or even know what they are? Give this a try and you may find yourself in the same place as I was. Be present and enjoy time with those you love. The smiles are worth it all.
